Silk Painting Class Report

Stephanie Strong guided us through a fun silk painting class this afternoon. Participants included Gwen, Alice, Danila, Roz and Robbie.

Silk painting is a lot like working with watercolor, but special dyes are used instead of paint. The basic steps are to stretch a piece of silk on a frame, draw a design on the silk using a “resist”, paint with the dyes in the areas defined by the resist, dry with a hairdryer, paint on “dyeset”, dry again, remove silk from frame, rinse, pat dry, and then iron completely dry.

Here are our results (some still in progress):

More Fun with Watercolor Batik

Back by popular demand, Gwen held another “Watercolor Batik” workshop on Tuesday, April 25th. Participating members included Beryl, Danila, Karen D., Karen M., Robbie and Roz.

Watercolor Batik is a process of layering watercolors and wax on rice paper. The “fun-scary” part comes after you are done applying the wax and paint. You crumple or accordion pleat your paper, lay it flat, and apply a wash to the cracks in the wax. After another layer of wax, you press the painting between newspaper using an iron.

First, an example of Gwen’s beautiful watercolor batik paintings.

April 2017 Exhibit

The Valley Arts Group invites you to visit our latest exhibit of original art by Sudden Valley artists at the Creekside (YMCA) Barn. The show runs from April 8th to July 8th.

Birds, Birds and More Birds!

Some of the Birds at the Creekside Barn

For this quarter, we put out a challenge for artwork related to birds. We thought we might not have enough birds to fill the feature wall. Instead we had an amazing response – a collection of 37 bird creations by various members of the group. They are displayed in the Creekside Barn, as well as the library. Stop by for a visit and see if you can find them all!

Enjoy a warm drink and/or lunch from Ken’s Cozy Kitchen while you relax with friends and browse the new artwork!

Open House at the Barn

What a great turnout for the VAG Open House at the Barn!  Lots of folks in attendance throughout the afternoon to enjoy our exhibit and take the opportunity to meet the Sudden Valley artists behind the pieces on display.  It was a wonderful show of support from our community!

Penny Bamford at Jansen Art Center

Penny had three textile pieces accepted into the Juried Spring Show at the Jansen Art Center in Lynden. They are currently on display in the Jansen Art Center library with other textiles: some silk painting, some nuno felting and some exquisite applique/quilting.

Congratulations, Penny!

The textile exhibit will be on display for two months. The opening party is Thursday, March 2, 6-8pm.
